KTrace developers meeting :D

Some weeks ago we started developing KTrace, a graphical KDE frontend for strace. We quickly managed to have something which worked, but development stalled after that.

Today we are holding the first KTrace developers meeting to make some decisions about the next features that will be coded. If you want to propose a feature that you would like to see in KTrace (or just a better name proposal), feel free to write a comment :)

    Stencil?

  2. Thom May Says:

ktrace is a kernel util on *bsd, so you want to avoid that…

  3. DeKay Says:

I don’t like K-based names. Fred’s suggestion of Stencil is perfect!

  4. isaac Says:

I already knew about ktrace from *bsd and I also dislike K-based names, that’s why I’m looking for a new name :) If it’s called KTrace is because we haven’t come up with a better name yet.

KTrace is not about graphics, but a tool for “tracing” system calls, so I’m not sure Stencil is that perfect unless I’m missing something :D

Please don’t pick any name from any wired language that you cannot find if you need it (Stencil is a perfect example of a meaningless name). I sometimes have a hard time reading the commit-digest because the names of programs are absolutely meaningless. ktrace would be my first guess if I was looking for a KDE based trace program (maybe kstrace).

  6. Anonymous Says:

Name it “inspeKtor”! Well, all lowercase.

  7. ben Says:

anonymous, inspektor is VERY cool! The Kdbg-guys are going to cry out loud for no having thought of this first :)

  8. E Says:

    Call detective
    System detective
    Sysdetective
    Investigator
    CSI (“[Sys]call/Signal investigator”) :-)

  9. Michal Says:

How about the integration to krunner (or how the dialog for running apps is called)? I mean something like a checkbox “Trace this app”, along with Details button for detailed tracing settings.

  10. Thomas Says:

    inspektor gets a +1 from me :)

Just be sure to have a dialog or menu called ‘gadget’ :P

  11. Michael Schutte Says:

    Heh, Inspektor

  12. isaac Says:

inspektor it is, since revision 700496 :)

  13. Enrico Says:

Yess ;-) Long life inspektor !!
